The Tempe Fire, Medical, Rescue Department offers CPR and First Aid Classes for groups only. If you need a class for an individual, you can call Kiwanis Recreation Center at (480) 350-5201.
Introduction to CPR - This CPR class includes Adult CPR and Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO). Training also includes child and infant CPR and FBAO. Class participants are required to pass a written examination. Class time required is 3-4 hours. Cost: $35.00 per person.
CPR Pro - Adult, child, infant, one and two-rescuer CPR, Foreign Body Airway Obstruction, barrier device use is taught. There is a mandatory skills evaluation and written exam for this level of training. Class time required is 4 hours. Cost: $35.00 per person.
AED - Automatic External Defibrillator - This course includes adult one rescuer CPR, Foreign Body Airway Obstruction, barrier device use and hands-on AED training. There is a mandatory skills evaluation and written exam. Class time required is 2 hours. Prerequisite: current CPR training. Cost: $35.00
First Aid - This course prepares the lay person by developing skills to be able to give immediate care for the injured or suddenly ill people. This program concentrates on the first five minutes of care given until professional medical care arrives. There will be a written examination for this course. Class time required is 2 1/2 hours. Cost: $35.00 per person. Topics covered in this course include:
• Body Substance Isolation (BSI) Precautions
• Bleeding Emergencies
• Burn Care
• Bone Fractures
• Medical Emergencies
• Heat and Cold Emergencies
• "The Good Samaritan Law"
• Responding to an emergency
Bloodborne Pathogens - This course teaches precautionary practices that are recommended by such organizations as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Center for Disease control and Prevention. Passing a written examination is required. Class time required is 1 hour. Cost: $30.00 per person. Topics covered in this course include:
• Bloodborne Diseases Transmission
• Assessing Your Exposure Risk
• Body Substance Isolation (BSI)
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Container, Color Coding and Labels
• What to do if exposed?
• Exposure Control
• Resource List
American Safety and Health Institute cards are issued upon completion of each course.
Minimum of 8 students is needed to begin a class. A television, DVD player and ample room for CPR practice on manikins are required for each class.
