In 2020, the City, in conjunction with the Downtown Tempe Authority (DTA), noticed that the number of parking spaces at the curb needed to be reevaluated to ensure all mobility options were being served. Downtown has seen increased demand from food delivery services, freight delivery, scooters, personal vehicle parking and transportation network companies such as Uber and Lyft.

The City and DTA engaged in a study that focused on the curb lane space (interior street vehicle lane) within the downtown district that is used for paid parking, loading zones, bike lanes, and transit stops. The goal of the study was to fully understand the current and future demands of the curb space to ensure it is being used efficiently. It is the City’s intention to use technology to aid in the management of these curb lane spaces.    

The consultant and steering committee have completed the study which included conducting significant community outreach and evaluating potential technology upgrades. The result provided a toolbox of modern solutions and a plan that will provide a roadmap of any changes in addition to adjusting to future changing needs.
