In 2020, transportation and mobile sources accounted for 45% of Tempe’s total community greenhouse gas emissions. To address this, Tempe has upgraded its transportation sector by enhancing light rail, bike, pedestrian, and streetcar infrastructure. These improvements reduce the reliance on single-occupancy vehicles, decrease emissions, and increase safety, helping to make Tempe a 20-minute city.

Electric Vehicle Charging

Between Tempe residents and workers, over 224,000 vehicles travel throughout the city each day, contributing more than 1.2 million metric tons of CO2e annually. Reducing these emissions is essential, and transitioning from gasoline-powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) is a core strategy in Tempe’s Climate Action Plan.
