Building a new standard for global data use practices in cities

In May 2022, Tempe was selected from a competitive pool of applicants from North, Central, and South America to be part of the inaugural cohort of the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance.

Through targeted support and training, Tempe leverages data to advance equity, engage and inspire residents, and solve the biggest urban challenges of today. This provides an opportunity to connect with and learn from a network of city leaders and build a new standard for global data use practices in cities.

During the year-long program, Tempe’s cohort received executive education classes, individualized coaching and consultation, and a 12-month investment to improve critical data capacities such as performance management, procurement, evaluation, or data as a service. The completion of the program allowed the City to develop a City Data Workforce Strategic Plan focusing on key strategies to invest in, empower and mobilize the City’s workforce to manage, use and communicate with data for equitable and inclusive public impact.

The Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance (City Data Alliance or CDA), led by the Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence (GovEx) at Johns Hopkins University, works with mayors and senior city leaders across the Americas to translate data and AI into measurable improvements for residents.

Cities in the program move beyond planning and into practice. The City Data Alliance supports city teams in designing, testing, and launching focused, data-driven projects that address pressing resident-facing challenges. Through a structured, practice-based approach, cities strengthen both their ability to deliver results in the near term and their institutional capacity to sustain and scale what works over time.
