In an effort to increase the availability of high-speed fiber available to the residents and business owners in the City of Tempe, the City has made available a brand-new Fiber License and Right-of-Way Use Agreement. The license allows providers access to the City’s right-of-way and encourages internet service providers to increase access to internet services available within the City.

Tempe City Council approved the requirement of a fiber permit on June 27, 2024. Read more about their decision and Tempe Fiber.

Information for residents

Internet access is vital to the education and prosperity of residents, from helping students do their homework to helping people apply for jobs. It’s also an economic development tool. The Fiber License and Right-of-Way agreement is meant to encourage internet providers to increase the availability of low-cost, high-speed fiber internet in Tempe.

When will fiber be installed in my neighborhood?

Fiber companies determine if they would like to install fiber in Tempe and they select the locations for installations as part of the permitting process. Tempe works closely with fiber providers wishing to work in Tempe to allow them to install in locations they deem commercially viable. If your neighborhood is selected, Tempe and the internet service provider will communicate with you via postcards, doorhangers, email or other notification methods.

How will fiber installation projects impact me?

While the City of Tempe is expanding high-speed fiber access, we are also mindful of the impact construction has on our roadways. Tempe works closely with internet providers and construction contractors to minimize disruptions where possible. Part of the permitting process includes scheduling installation around other area infrastructure projects, like street paving, to ensure cost savings and less disruption to neighborhoods.
