City of Tempe, AZ
Home MenuReal Time Operations Center
Tempe’s Real Time Operations Center (RTOC) uses advanced software to map and integrate traffic cameras, 9-1-1 calls, and other technologies to provide critical information to first responders. This allows responders to plan and coordinate needed resources and effectively handle emergency situations.
This technology extends the functions of Tempe’s Transit Operations Center, which debuted in 2017, and allows operators to be virtually on-scene prior to the call being dispatched; providing first responders with critical information ahead of their arrival.
Tempe is one of five Valley cities to have a RTOC. Tempe has partnered with agencies that have RTOC's since 2017 to make visits from U.S. Presidents and other high-profile dignitaries possible while increasing public safety. We also work with their centers during emergencies that cross city boundaries.
The benefits of the RTOC include real time information sharing, increased public safety, decreased response time and coordination of Tempe emergency services. When seconds matter, RTOC allows us to be minutes ahead, planning the best response.
HOW IT WORKS
Cameras located on traffic lights, city buildings and in some city parks connect back to Tempe’s Real Time Operation’s Center alongside video feeds from Valley Metro, Arizona State University and other city partners.
In the RTOC, Tempe Police, Transit staff, and other Tempe emergency service providers review camera footage only in response to calls from the public and are not continuously monitored.
FUTURE PLANS
In the future we hope to extend Tempe’s RTOC in support of Tempe’s Park Rangers, Care 7 and other teams to increase the feeling of safety in Tempe, address graffiti, landscaping and more. We can also expand the number of cameras.
RECORDS REQUESTS
Tempe’s RTOC records may be requested through the Police Public Records Request process. Records produced by Tempe partners should be requested from them.
