K9 Officer and K9s

The Tempe Police K-9 Unit is part of the Field Operations Division and plays a vital role in supporting patrol officers and enhancing public safety. The unit is currently comprised of five full-time K-9 teams, each consisting of a highly trained police dog and a dedicated handler.

Our K-9s are certified in drug detection, explosives detection, and patrol operations, and they regularly assist in searches, suspect apprehension, and community events. Their specialized skills allow them to work in environments and situations where human officers may face limitations, making them an invaluable asset to the department and the community we serve.

Life Beyond the Badge

K9 Silver Patch 1The bond between a police K-9 and their handler is unlike any other. Each of our dogs lives with their handler and becomes part of the family. When not on duty, the dogs enjoy downtime at home—whether that’s playing ball in the yard, swimming in the family pool, or simply relaxing inside the house.

This balance of work and home life helps ensure our K-9s are not only effective partners in the field but also well-cared-for members of their handler’s family.
