The City of Tempe is offering a rebate to help residential water customers with large grass lawns increase their irrigation efficiency. Providing landscape plants with the exact amount of water needed can reduce landscape water use by 30-50%. Technology - combined with education - can help increase efficiency and effectiveness of irrigation systems.
Maintaining a lush landscape in the Sonoran Valley can be a challenge. In fact, up to 70% of your home's water use is outdoors, especially if you maintain a desert lawn.
Tempe is offering personalized rebates for increasing landscape irrigation efficiency worth up to $500.
Rebate Application Checklist:
- Check that you are eligible to receive the rebate. Only single-family residential properties qualify, and the applicant must be the owner of the property.
- Contact the City of Tempe Water Conservation Program to schedule a Home Landscape Water Consultation.
- Work with Water Conservation Specialist to create a personalized plan for the purchase of technology, which may include: rain sensors, flow sensors, pressure regulating spray heads, high-efficiency spray nozzles and/or smart controllers.
- Purchase and install the recommended technology. The City recommends that the installation of irrigation components be performed by a qualified irrigation technician. It is the responsibility of the owner to insure proper installation.
- Complete the High Efficiency Turf Rebate Form and submit the application along with original copies of purchase receipts to Water Utilities Department / Water Conservation Office / P.O. Box 5002 / Tempe, Arizona 85280.
- Water Conservation staff will contact the applicant to schedule an inspection of the installed technology. After the inspection is complete and the rebate application is approved, it will take four to six weeks to receive a check.
Smart Irrigation Controllers
Do you adjust your watering at least four times a year? If not, you are using anywhere from 30-50% more water than necessary. Plant water demands change depending on the weather, but it can be a hassle to manually change watering frequency. "Smart" controllers will do the adjustment for you, if you provide the correct settings. Connected to wi-fi, these new generation controllers communicate with local weather stations and make daily updates to irrigation schedules. When programmed correctly, a "smart" controller can save you water and money while maintaining the health of your landscape. If you upgrade your irrigation controller, your old one can be recycled! Just take it to an Ewing recycling station.
Rain and Flow Sensors
Rain sensors are simple but powerful. They simply skip any regularly scheduled irrigation if the sensors detects sufficient rainfall. They are generally small, simple devices that are inexpensive.
Flow sensors will monitor for low or excessive flows, providing alerts if a leak is detected.
Pressure Regulating Spray Heads
How efficient is your sprinkler system? Often it comes down to your spray heads. Spray heads are designed to operate a specific psi and, without proper pressure regulation, they typically run at a much higher pressure than they were designed to handle, efficiently. High Efficiency Nozzles
Upgrading your spray heads with high-efficiency nozzles can help increase your system's efficiency by 10 to 20 percent. These nozzles apply water at a slower rate than the traditional spray head, which gives that water a chance to soak in the ground instead of running off into the street. While you should skip your irrigation cycle if it is too windy, some nozzles even apply larger drops of water to resist being carried away by a light breeze. Best of all, it is easy to replace. Often a retrofit concerns unscrewing the old nozzle and filter screen and replacing it with a new nozzle and filter screen. Don't forget to adjust the arc, distance, and/or spray pattern as needed.
