Tempe AARP Experience Corps

The City of Tempe’s AARP Experience Corps is a local affiliate of the national AARP Experience Corps. Tempe's program focuses on early literacy skills and is designed to provide support to struggling students in partnership with the Tempe Elementary School District.

Tempe Experience Corps volunteers have helped more than 3,000 at-risk students reach grade-level reading benchmarks since the city’s program was established in 2006. Due to its longtime success, the Tempe program now serves as a national model (PDF) for communities across the country.

Through the Tempe AARP Experience Corps program:

  • Students in kindergarten through third grade who have tested below benchmark standards in reading for their grade level receive one-on-one tutoring twice a week during the school year.
  • The program engages adults 50+ in the community to help children become proficient readers by the time they finish third grade.
  • Students not only strengthen academic skills, but also show increased self-confidence by working with tutors who motivate and encourage.
  • The generational exchange allows children to succeed and adult tutors to thrive, making communities stronger.

The effectiveness of the program is measured by student reading scores as well as surveys of teachers, principals and volunteers.

Volunteer Information

Volunteers don't need special skills, just a willingness to share their experience, time and patience.  Comprehensive training and support services are provided. Volunteers commit to approximately five hours per week September to May. Each tutor is assigned to four students and meets individually with them for 30 minutes twice weekly during school hours.

Volunteers must undergo background checks, including fingerprinting, and 15 hours of pre-service training.

Changing Lives

Rich - lighter 2

"One of my kids is going to finish high school that wouldn’t have, one of them is going to go to college that wouldn’t have. I will never know. But if a kid goes to college that wouldn’t have, think of what a difference that makes in his life.” - tutor Rich Favaro.  Read more...
