Tempe PRE is a full-day, high-quality preschool program in 20 classrooms housed in 12 local elementary schools in the Tempe Elementary School and Kyrene School districts. The program is five days a week with schedules corresponding to the individual school locations.
Select schools also have extended hours before- and after regular school hours.
High Scope Curriculum
Tempe PRE uses the HighScope Preschool Curriculum which is aligned to the Arizona Early Learning Standards. The curriculum allows for structured and unstructured play, experiences connected to student choice and interest.
Small Class Sizes
We have a low student-to-adult ratio (9:1). Each class has a maximum of 18 students who are taught by Early Childhood Education Certified teachers aided by well-trained instructional assistants.
Access to high-quality preschool
Now in its third year, Tempe PRE began as a two-year pilot program in 2017. Launched by Tempe City Council, the program seeks to increase access to high-quality preschool for a wide-range of families living in Tempe and neighboring cities. The city offers financial assistance to income-qualified Tempe families whose child has been accepted into the program.
Tempe PRE is achieving high-quality results
According to the “Tempe PRE Year One Implementation Report,” funded by First Things First, Tempe PRE’s 3- and 4-year olds “shifted from performing below their expected developmental level to meeting or exceeding developmental expectations in all domains” of mathematics, social-emotional, physical, language, cognitive and literacy.
Additionally, in 2018, most of the 20 Tempe PRE classrooms received a Quality or better rating by Quality First, Arizona’s statewide Quality Rating and Improvement System.
