Every second matters during a cardiac emergency.

When someone goes into cardiac arrest, the first few minutes before paramedics arrive can make a lifesaving difference. CPR helps keep blood flowing to the brain and vital organs until first responders can take over.

Most cardiac arrests happen at home, and the first person there is rarely a firefighter or paramedic. It’s often a spouse, parent, friend, coworker or neighbor.

That’s why Tempe Fire Medical Rescue is launching a community effort to help more residents feel prepared and confident stepping in to help during an emergency.

In 2024, more than half of bystander CPR in Tempe was started by family members or non-family bystanders before crews arrived. Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.
