Protecting Tempe Since 1903

Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department (TFMRD) has proudly served the community for more than 120 years. Established in 1903 when Tempe was a small but growing town, the department began as a volunteer organization focused on fire protection—a critical need for a developing city.

From Volunteer Force to Full-Service Agency

As Tempe grew, so did the department. TFMRD transitioned into a full-time, professional fire service to meet the demands of a more urban and expanding population. Over time, its capabilities have expanded beyond fire suppression to include advanced emergency medical services, Hazardous Materials and technical rescue operations.

All-Hazards Response and Medical Rescue

In 2014, the department changed its name to Tempe Fire Medical Rescue to better reflect its all-hazards mission. In 2017, it launched a city-run ambulance service to provide faster, more integrated emergency care for residents.

Modern Service for a Modern City

Today, TFMRD operates seven fire stations and maintains a modern fleet of fire engines and ambulances. The department plays a vital role in fire prevention, emergency response, and code enforcement, helping protect lives, property, and the community’s well-being.

Rooted in Service

While technology and tactics have changed, the mission remains the same: to professionally and compassionately help people. TFMRD is honored to be a trusted part of building a safe, healthy and resilient Tempe.
