Why create a new Master Plan for Rio Salado Park?

1. Since Tempe Beach Park opened in 1999, it has been well-loved but also over-loved. It’s time to look at how to transition it for the future.
2. There are many underutilized spaces within Rio Salado Park. They could be enhanced so that they provide additional space for programming.
3. The city is often approached by outside resources and vendors to "do something” in the Park. We need a plan that provides the framework for implementation.

The Rio Salado and Beach Park Masterplan is a comprehensive planning effort to develop improvement recommendations that will shape the area over the next 20 to 30 years. The draft conceptual plan is a collection of maps and overlays that capture the ideas and recommendations that the city has received for the long-term vision of the area. There is no funding attached to any of the proposed ideas.

The Rio Salado and Beach Park area includes both sides of Tempe Town Lake between Priest Drive and Rural Road.  The master plan will focus on programming, infrastructure, access, use of space and land/water activities to provide a blueprint for future of the area.

Rio Salado and Tempe Beach Park are located within project boundaries for the city’s Urban Core Masterplan, an area undergoing a separate planning effort to create a comprehensive and unified development blueprint for Downtown Tempe and the Urban Core that is sustainable and cohesive.
