Project Overview:

The city’s improvements to Waggoner Park include new playground equipment with rubberized surfacing, a new picnic area with picnic tables and shade structure, accessible walkways, new lighting and trees. Fitness equipment and a drinking fountain were installed in Waggoner Park West.

The improvements are partially funded out of the city’s Capital Improvement Program budget, as part of the Parks Improvement Plan, which is reinvesting more than $60 million into Tempe parks over the next five years. Additional modifications or enhancements to other park amenities are not included in the budgeted amount.

The City of Tempe and Kyrene School District continue to work together on safety and security measures for Waggoner Elementary School. In order to secure the school, the Kyrene School District installed fencing along the sidewalk between the school and the park and built new play facilities on their property in the summer of 2025. The  school previously installed a playground and basketball courts on the east side of Waggoner Park and used these amenities for school activities. That area is now outside the fence line and will not be used by the school, thus allowing for full time use of the park by the community during park hours.
