Rowing is divided into "sweep" and "sculling" disciplines. Sweep rowers each use a single oar, while sculling rowers use two smaller oars. Boats capable of seating two, four and eight individuals are used for sweep racing. When sculling rowers use single, double and four person shells (quads or 4x).

Junior Learn to Row
We usually run one dedicated Learn to Row in January and one in September. These are one day classes to give new athletes a chance to find out if rowing is for them and learn the basics before they join the team.
The novice program is for participants ages 12-18. It is for rowers who are new to the sport or who may not be interested in making a large time commitment. We will be working up to a point where athletes may be able to compete with varsity rowers. Prerequisite: Junior Learn to Row is recommended, but not required.
The Junior Rowing program is for ages 12-18 and is competitive, with training held five days per week in preparation for races held locally and nationally. Join one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Please understand that even though this is a club, we conduct our program with the same rules and expectations of a varsity high school sport.
Registration: Click here for upcoming classes About the program: The Tempe Town Lake Junior Rowing Program has been operating on Tempe Town Lake since 2005 with athletes traveling around the country to compete at a national level. The team is represented by many of the local schools and the athletes come together to race as one. There is no experience necessary! Every year new athletes join to become rowers and increase their opportunities to earn a college scholarship. We have sent many athletes to college rowing programs across the country.
