The Tempe Center for the Arts hosted its first ever TCA Urban Arts Jam, packed with a week full of free activities created by and for the Urban Arts Community including a 2-on-2 freestyle dance battle, DJs, street artists, dance and spoken word performances, an educational panel discussion, and a film screening. The events were co-created with Urban Arts Community members Bboy "House" Magana and Melissa Britt.

Next Gen Digital began documenting Phoenix-based battle, Worth the Weight. The format was developed by BBoy House in partnership with Johnny Castro as a way of creating an empowering and unifying platform for beginners while challenging the advanced movers. The battle style has allowed the Arizona urban arts community to grow, reshape and re-imagine the role of urban arts in Arizona.

TCA EDGE:  EPIK Dance Company & Tandem Duo

EPIK Dance Company is a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting and uplifting people by sharing their love of music, movement, and the arts. With a strong core of strong, multi-faceted dancers trained in a variety of disciplines, EPIK has been able to combine classic technical training with urban styles to become one of Arizona’s premier street fusion dance companies.

Founded by Sarah Off and Marilyn Clark Silva, Phoenix based Tandem Duo is an innovative violin/marimba duo that performs original commissions, compositions, and arrangements, as well as established works for the ensemble. Tandem Duo strives to fit concert repertoire to specific audiences while at the same time expanding the sonic experience for concertgoers.

TCA EDGE: Pocket Change Crew, Astrid Morales, and Wesley Skinner

Hip-Hop and classical music collide in this unique mash up featuring the breakdance group Pocket Change Crew, with pianist Astrid Morales and cellist Wesley Skinner. Together, they will present a fusion of hip-hop, breakdance, tangos, and salsas. This performance is guaranteed to break the boundaries of what audiences expect from a classical music experience.

AZ Beat Lab is a local youth development and beat making organization that facilitates workshops and musical performances through an intersection of traditional music education and community urban practices, while creating brave spaces for young and emerging adults to develop creative practices and community collaboration skills.
