Ditch The Dumpster!

Yard sales. Moving sales. Spring cleaning. Remodeling.

All great opportunities to donate your treasures.

Looking to host an individual or community yard sale, give your house a much-needed cleaning or take on a remodeling project? The City of Tempe not only provides you with specific instructions on how to donate leftover items from yard sales, moving sales and cleaning and remodeling projects, but we provide you with resources on how to host the best yard sale. As more Tempeans like you ditch the dumpster in favor of waste reduction, reuse and recycling, the city gets closer to meeting the recycling goals set by the Tempe Council while your pocketbook rejoices.

Spring Cleaning and Remodeling

  • Select a nonprofit from list below to arrange a free pickup.
  • Consider asking neighbors if they have items that they need picked up and coordinate the pickup for the same day and time.
  • If you are remodeling, contact Stardust Building Supplies in advance as they offer a free to little cost deconstruction service. Their deconstruction team carefully dismantles and removes kitchens, bathrooms, other rooms and the interior and exterior of residential and commercial buildings for reuse. Donated items are tax deductible.
  • Request a tax donation receipt.

Host a Yard Sale or Moving Sale

  • Use your personal Facebook and Twitter accounts to promote your yard sale or moving sale. Consider posting it on Nextdoor.

Host and Organize a Community Yard Sale

  • Select a nonprofit from below list for a post-yard sale pickup at least three to four weeks before the sale.
  • Inform the nonprofit if your community has less than ten homes participating – this helps them plan accordingly for smaller sales.
  • Encourage community residents who aren’t participating in the yard sale to contribute items to the post-sale pickup.
  • Use your personal and neighborhood Facebook and Twitter accounts to promote your yard sale. Visit www.tempe.gov/neighborhoodassociationsocialmediasites for a list of neighborhood social media sites. Consider posting it on Nextdoor.
  • If you are part of a neighborhood association and there are at least five homes participating, the city will mail out a postcard to your neighbors advertising the sale. To schedule a mailing, contact Neighborhood Services: neighborhoods@tempe.gov, 480-350-8234. Provide at least three weeks’ notice to allow adequate time for production.
  • The city can include sale information in e-blasts to HOAs and other relevant mailing lists for sales with at least five homes participating.
  • Request a tax donation receipt, which will be available onsite on the day of the sale or dropped off at your house after the pickup.
