About Us

The purpose of the Plan Review Section is to determine compliance with the codes and ordinances adopted by the City of Tempe.  Once the construction documents for a building or structure is determined to be in compliance, a permit may be issued.

Qualifying projects are at the discretion of the Plan Reviewers for over the counter permits.

Single family residential project eligible for over the counter permitting and plan review and permitting questions by appointment

Beginning Monday, Jan. 14, 2019 the Community Development Building Safety counter review team will see people on an appointment basis. People may sign up for a 30-minute appointment from 9 to 11 a.m.  or 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday to talk about their remodeling projects, home additions or small commercial projects. They can ask questions about how City of Tempe Building Codes apply to their project and get preliminary plan review, time permitting, prior to submitting for permits. With this new appointment system, there is no waiting and we can ensure that the most appropriate staff person is available to help with your project.

You can sign up for an appointment by emailing permitcenter@tempe.gov or calling 480-350-8341 and ask to speak to the permit center. Please provide the project address, a preliminary description of the work and include any preliminary code questions and/or proposed floor plans with your request.

You may also email preliminary building code and engineering private development questions to permitcenter@tempe.gov

Attention: As an option to paper plans, you may submit plans in an electronic format.
