Mark Mitchell is a third-generation Arizonan with deep roots in the Tempe community. Before being elected Mayor in May 2012, Mitchell was elected to the City Council in March of 2000 and served three four-year terms.
Mayor Mitchell is a native of Tempe, attending elementary and middle school in the community before graduating from McClintock High School. He also earned a Political Science degree from Arizona State University.
During his time as Mayor, Mark has strengthened Tempe’s local economy by working to attract new businesses and retain current business partners. Since his election in May 2012, the City of Tempe has added over 33,000 jobs and overseen over $2.6 billion in investment from the private sector.
Mitchell has overseen City-wide investments in Tempe neighborhoods. Over the next five years, $140 million will go toward updating Tempe streets and rideaways and revitalizing neighborhood parks and playgrounds, with a focus on safety, accessibility, and the desires of each individual community.
Mark has made sustainability a priority in his time as Mayor; in his tenure, the Council has passed a cutting-edge Climate Action Plan, created Tempe’s Sustainability Commission, and pledged that municipal operations will be carbon neutral by 2050, with 100% of electricity coming from renewables by 2035.
Mayor Mitchell is also committed to maintaining and improving Tempe’s world-class assets like the Tempe Center for the Arts and Tempe Town Lake, working with law enforcement to ensure that Tempe is made up of safe neighborhoods, and to providing a transparent city government.
As a community member, Mayor Mitchell has served on numerous boards and charitable organizations, including the Kiwanis Club of Tempe, Tempe Diablos, Tempe Leadership Class XV, and Tempe Sister Cities. Mitchell is on the Board of Directors of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council and is the Chairman of the Rio Salado Foundation.
Mayor Mitchell serves as the City of Tempe’s representative and the Chair of the Maricopa Association of Government’s (MAG) Regional Council and Regional Council Executive Committee. He is also a member of MAG’s Transportation Policy Committee. Mitchell has served as President of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns.
On the national level, Mayor Mitchell is on the National League of Cities’ Advisory Council and is on the Advisory Board to the U.S. Conference of Mayors. He is also the Chair of the Conference’s Mayors and Metro Universities Task Force.
Mayor Mitchell is continuing his family’s legacy in public service. His father, Harry Mitchell, was Mayor of Tempe from 1978 to 1994 and served on the City Council for more than 24 years. Harry Mitchell was also elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served Congressional District 5, including the City of Tempe, from 2007 to 2011.
Mark has two daughters that he is raising in his hometown.
