The Tempe Human Relations Commission (HRC) is excited to welcome up to two youth members to its ranks. Both the HRC and the Tempe City Council believe it is important to have a consistent voice from community members under eighteen who can provide insight on the unique human relations issues facing youth. This is an opportunity for young residents to develop leadership skills and ensure their interests, needs, and ideas are represented in our city government.

Position Details and Requirements 
The City is seeking applicants who meet the following qualifications as established in Tempe City Code, Section 2-225:

• Residency: Must be a resident of the City of Tempe.

• Age: Must be between fourteen (14) and eighteen (18) years old at the time of appointment.

Term Structure and Flexibility
To accommodate students' schedules, the youth member position is designed with flexibility in mind:

• Term Schedule: The official term for youth members begins on Sept. 1st of each year and ends on May 31st of the following year, aligning with the typical school year.

• Term Limits: Youth members may serve up to two (2) FULL one-year terms.

• Note for Inaugural Members: The first members appointed this fall will serve a partial term beginning on their appointment date and ending May 31, 2026. This initial service will not count against the two-term limit.

The Human Relations Commission advises the Mayor and City Council and assists City departments on ways:

• to eliminate prejudice and discrimination;

• in which people from different cultural backgrounds can be made to feel at home in the community; and,

• in which information on human relations topics can be disseminated, including conducting surveys and studies, convening forums, seminars and workshops, and sponsoring special event and award recognitions.

The Human Relations Commission is composed of 11 members who are Tempe residents. Terms are for three years.
