The Commission on Disability Concerns advises and makes recommendations to the City Council; assists City departments and the City Manager in the establishment of essential policies, rules, and regulations relating to compliance with Federal and State disabilities legislation or regulations and on other disabilities concerns and issues as needed; prepares and submits an annual report to the City Manager and City Council; and, takes further actions as may be deemed necessary and appropriate to further the goals of the Commission.

Youth Members on the Commission on Disability Concerns
The creation of the youth member positions on the Commission on Disability Concerns was the result of a public legislative process. The Tempe City Council held a first public hearing on March 5, 2026, and a second and final hearing on March 26, 2026.

Youth Member Opportunity – Be a Voice for Accessibility and Inclusion in Tempe

The Commission on Disability Concerns (CDC) welcomes community members under the age of eighteen to apply for up to two youth member positions, providing insight on accessibility, inclusion, and issues impacting individuals with disabilities in the Tempe community.

Eligibility Requirements
The City is seeking applicants who meet the following qualifications as established in Tempe City Code, Section 2-265:

• Residency: Must be a resident of the City of Tempe.

• Age: Must be between fourteen (14) and eighteen (18) years old at the time of appointment or reappointment.

Term Structure and Flexibility
To accommodate students' schedules, the youth member position is designed with flexibility in mind:

• Term Schedule: Sept. 1 through May 31 of the following year, aligning with the typical school year.

• Term Limits: Youth members may serve up to two (2) full one-year terms.

Interested youth are encouraged to apply.

2. In the Board/Commission dropdown menu, select Commission on Disability Concerns.
3. This will prompt you to answer a few additional questions to confirm you meet the specific requirements for the youth member position.

Composition

The Commission on Disability Concerns is composed of nine (9) adult members who are Tempe residents, as well as up to two youth members. Adult member terms are three (3) years. To serve as a youth member, applicants must be residents of the City of Tempe and be between fourteen (14) and eighteen (18) years old at the time of appointment or reappointment. Youth member terms begin on Sept. 1 of each year and end on May 31 of the following year. Youth members may serve up to two (2) full one-year terms.
