5 KEY INITIATIVES
Crime/Fear of Crime
Crime and fear of crime have a corrosive effect on individuals and communities. Our primary purpose as an organization is to work with the members of our community to deliver effective strategies to reduce crime and the fear of crime in Tempe.
Traffic & Multimodal Safety
As a rapidly evolving and densely populated urban center, Tempe continues to experience increased traffic congestion. As the City pursues new and alternative modes of transportation, our roles is to support engineering efforts linked to new and existing transportation infrastructure, and to provide education and enforcement to increase traffic safety.
Community & Regional Engagement
Addressing crime and fear of crime requires genuine collaboration with our community and law enforcement partners. Individually and collectively, we must build and maintain effective and mutually beneficial relationships with both community members and law enforcement partners to solve public safety problems in Tempe.
Strategic & Criminal Analysis & Intelligence
Quality information and actionable criminal intelligence are at the hear of sound decision making and effective problem solving. Reliable, timely and accurate data must be collected, analyzed, evaluated and disseminated in a variety of forms and then consistently used to improve organization outcomes.
Employee Development, Support & Resilience
People are the greatest assest to our agency. Ensuring that our employees are appropriately supported is essential to maintaining a ready, adaptive, and resilient work force. Supervisors are encouraged to lead by example and work collaboratively with their employees to build and implement development plans.
The Tempe Police Department is currently comprised of three branches under the Office of the Chief.
Office of the Chief is responsible for the administration and general supervision of all police operations. The Office of the Chief is charged with the coordination of all investigations and procedures; the provision of leadership, management and administration; and the consistent building of strong and productive relationships with City departments and staff, residents, businesses, community groups, and the media.
Field Operations is comprised of North Patrol, South Patrol, Metro, Central City, and Traffic and is responsible for the following: (1) respond to police requests for service; (2) perform preliminary investigative work at crime scenes; (3) investigate and report incidents of crime; (4) investigate and report motor vehicle collisions; (5) conduct vehicle patrol to provide visibility, deterrence, and timely response in neighborhoods; (6) work with the community to address public safety concerns;(7) patrol and provide police resources to Tempe's Mill Avenue District, including providing police resources for special and unscheduled events; (8) provide crime prevention and community education programs to the public; (9) provide specialty services to enhance community safety, including Bike Team, Mounted Unit, Canine Unit, and Threat Mitigation functions.
Investigations & Organizational Services is comprised of Criminal and Special Investigations, Forensic Services, Personnel, and Detention Services and is responsible for the following: (1) investigate and clear Part I and Part II crimes against persons and property, as tracked by the Federal Bureau of Investigation nationwide; (2) mount investigative operations to fight narcotics trafficking and target violent and career criminals; (3) recruit, test and hire sworn officers and civilian personnel; (4) provide in-service training programs; (5) investigate internal complaints and serve as liaison with the Tempe Citizens Panel for review of police complaints and use of force; (6) provide jail and booking service and transport all prisoners to the City Court; (7) update and implement organizational policy and procedure.
Support Services is comprised of Communications, Records, Property, Police Analytics, Technical Services, and the Office of Management, Budget and Research. Services provided by this division are (1) answer all incoming calls and provide 24-hour dispatch service; (2) provide radio communications between the police station and all patrol field units; (3) provide full police records management services; (4) oversee planning, implementation, and management of police technology; (5) provide planning and research information and implementation; (6) administer departmental operating and capital improvement budgets; (7) gather and report intelligence information; (8) serve as the central tactical crime analysis and intelligence entity within the department.
