The Downtown Tempe Utility Boxes projects have transformed 10 unremarkable traffic control boxes from dust covered cabinets to 5-sided canvases. Local artists were commissioned to paint a two-dimensional depiction of the uniqueness of Arizona and Tempe, bringing public art to the street corners of Downtown Tempe.
Phase I, 2012: Six local artists each painted a utility box located on Mill Avenue between Rio Salado Parkway and 7th Street. These designs are also featured on City of Tempe Library cards, currently available at Tempe Public Library. This dual public art project was supported cooperatively by the City of Tempe and Downtown Tempe Authority.
Phase, II, 2014: Four local artists each painted a utility box, three located on Ash Avenue between Rio Salado Parkway and 5th Street, and one on 5th Street at College Avenue. This public art project was supported cooperatively by the City of Tempe, Downtown Tempe Authority, and Core Campus.
