Tempe Instagrammys celebrates photographers and the best photos taken of Tempe each year. The contest honors local photographers with recognition, trophies and very special Tempe prizes.

How to Enter

Tag your photos on Instagram with #TempeInstagrammys19. It helps if you tag us as well - @tempegov.

Deadline to enter is Dec. 19. Nominees will be privately notified on Dec. 21. Happy holidays! 

Awards Celebration: When and Where 

Friday, Jan. 11 
5:30 p.m. TCA EDGE Happy Hour
6:30 p.m. Awards Ceremony
Tempe Center for the Arts

Start the evening off with a party! EDGE Happy Hour begins at 5:30 p.m. in the lobby with live music and selfies. Instagrammy award presentations will start at 6:30 p.m. 

This year, the awards celebration will be hosted inside the Studio at Tempe Center for the Arts, a 200-seat black box with a huge screen for photos, a stage and more. Josh Frigerio of ABC 15 will host the celebration with awards also given away by many community leaders. 

Parking at TCA is under construction and is to the west of the building. Arrive a little early to catch a ride in one of our golf carts or take LYFT and get out at the front door.

Only in Tempe Prizes

The Tempe Instagrammys celebrate the beauty of our community and the stunning art of photographers who make this city shine. It makes sense that our prizes come can only be found here, too.

Each Top Winner will receive:

  • A spot in a display of winning photos at the Tempe Festival of the Arts
  • Their name and winning photo included in a banner of winning photos to be hung on the Elmore Town Lake Pedestrian Bridge
  • Their winning photo on City of Tempe social media platforms and included in a video about the 2019 Tempe Instagrammys
  • The prize associated with their category
  • 25 cards of their photo. 

2019 Contest Categories

The top winner in each category will receive a prize package and trophy. Honorable mentions may be awarded. Those winners will receive trophies. All nominees selected for the category by judges will win certificates. 

Best of @Tempegov - Photographer of the Year. Must submit five photos or more to be considered.  This prize package includes your photo hung for a year at the Tempe History Museum, your profile on the City of Tempe website with a short video featuring you and your work that will also air on Tempe 11. 

Mayor's Choice - Mayor Mark Mitchell names a day in the honor of the photographer whose photo he believes best represents the spirit of Tempe. Winner will also receive a package of Tempe fun.

Festival of the Arts Award - It's the 50th year for the Tempe Festival of the Arts. Take a great photo capturing the imagination and creativity of this event and you will win a package of downtown Tempe goodies.

ABC 15 Award - ABC 15 will select their favorite photo and provide a prize package that could include a station tour and more.

Tempe Tourism Award - For the photo you would want to share with a visitor to our city. The winner is selected byTempe Tourism and they will offer a basket of amazing prizes.

Tempe Camera Award - For the most technically excellent and creative photo. Winner selected by Tempe Camera. This winner will receive gifts from Tempe Camera.

Wavemaker Award - In Tempe, to be considered a wavemaker, you are not only a great photographer, you are creative and caring about your Instagram community. We will pick two photographers who emulate these qualities for these very special awards. Winners will receive special prize packages from Tempe and be honored by Tempe City Council at a future meeting. 

Town Lake Boating Award - Picked by our Boating staff, this photo should showcasing boating at the lake. You'll win a gift certificate for boating experiences.

Tempe Center for the Arts Award - Best photo of the Tempe Center for the Arts building or the activities that happen inside the building. Winners receive tickets to TCA events. 

There will be several awards for great photos that do not fit into these categories.

Contest Winners must agree to the conditions that our attorneys have set for us once their photo has been selected in order to be named a winner and receive a prize.  There will be one winner for each category unless otherwise noted. At judge's discretion, there may be runner ups who will be awarded certificates.
