Each year, the Tempe Bike Hero Award recognizes individuals and organizations that aid in increasing awareness of bicycling and promote bicycling as a viable mode of transportation. This year, the Tempe Transportation Commission, a 15-member Tempe resident advisory board appointed by the Mayor, chose an organization for its contributions in promoting bicycle awareness and making Tempe a great biking community.

On April 20, Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell will present this year’s coveted Bike Hero award to Broadmor Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Bikecats program. Since 2010, this organization has improved the safety, skill and comfort of young Tempe bike riders and fostered a new generation of avid bike users to a group which has totaled more than 1,000 students and parents.

“I’m so excited to be a part of a program that encourages our kids to be outside, active and riding bikes,” Broadmor Elementary School librarian Polly Baldwin said. “Each year we’re able to touch more and more families through our Bikecats community, creating more and more future Tempe bike advocates.”

In 2010 the program was launched by Broadmor parent Jason Franz. Today, the program is managed by Polly Baldwin, Broadmor Elementary School librarian, along with the help of student parents Gwen Melis, Brad Clemens and Jon Kelman. The Bikecats meet four to six times during the year and incorporate bike safety tips, fostering essential bike skills, community bike rides and more. The program is open to all Broadmor Elementary School students, alumni, families and neighborhood residents.

The Tempe City Council will present the 2017 Tempe Bike Hero Award at the regular city council meeting April 20 at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 31 E. Fifth Street.
