Sgt. Steve Carbajal

Tempe Police Department Traffic Bureau
Vehicular Crimes / Police Motorcycle Training

Tempe Police responded August 7 at approximately 8:30 p.m. to the intersection of Scottsdale Rd. and Weber Dr., where witnesses called 9-1-1 to report a hit and run collision.  The victim was crossing Scottsdale Road mid-block when he was struck by a red sport utility vehicle traveling southbound. The suspect vehicle slowed down after hitting the victim, then continued southbound at a high rate of speed.

The adult male victim was treated by firefighter medics at the scene and transported to hospital, where he was taken into surgery for critical injuries. 29 year old Tyler Jim Shepherd later died from injuries sustained in the collision.

The investigation remains open and active. Investigators believe the suspect vehicle to be a 2007 metallic red or maroon Dodge Durango or Dodge Nitro (stock photos of both vehicles below).  It is believed the suspect vehicle will have damage to the front end.

Anyone with information regarding the incident or the vehicle, please call the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. Thank you.
