Impaired Driver Arrested
Two Pedestrians Hit By Vehicle
On Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at approximately 11:30 PM 22 year old Andrew Merriman (DOB: 07/17/1991) was driving westbound on 5th St. and lost control of his vehicle, causing him to collide with two pedestrians walking westbound on the sidewalk. Both victims were knocked to the ground, one of them sustaining very serious injuries.
The victims consisted of a mother, visiting from out of state and her son who had just graduated from ASU. They were both walking back from his graduation ceremony when they were struck by the vehicle. The mother was transported to the hospital with very serious injuries where she is still being treated.
Investigation showed that Merriman was driving a 2009 Ford Mustang and had just left El Heje Bar on Mill Ave. It appears alcohol was a factor in this collision and Merriman showed signs of intoxication at the time of the collision. Andrew Merriman was booked and charged for Aggravated DUI, Aggravated Assault and two counts of Endangerment.
Part of this investigation includes trying to determine the amount of alcohol that Merriman consumed at El Hefe and whether any liquor laws were violated by the business.
Tempe Police want to remind the public of the dangers of drinking and driving, showing the extreme seriousness and often deadly consequences of this crime.
