Tempe, Ariz. – The new school year is already underway for Tempe’s K–12 students, and Arizona State University’s fall semester kicks off next week—bringing tens of thousands of students back into the city. With more people walking, biking, and driving around school zones, neighborhoods, and the ASU campus, the Tempe Police Department is launching Operation: Safe Start from August 15 through September 7 to help keep everyone safe.
During this time, you’ll see more officers in and around schools, bus stops, and high-traffic areas—especially during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Officers will be making sure drivers slow down, stop for pedestrians, follow bike lane rules, and put their phones away. DUI enforcement will also be a priority, particularly during the evenings and weekends when ASU events, parties, and campus activities increase.
Operation: Safe Start also focuses on community outreach. Officers will connect with both school-age and college students to share tips on pedestrian, bicycle, and personal safety, and encourage reporting of suspicious activity.
“With so many new and returning students in Tempe, from kindergarten through college, this is a time when we all need to look out for one another,” said Tempe Police Chief Ken McCoy. “By slowing down, paying attention, and making smart choices, we can make the start of the school year safe for everyone.”
The goal is simple: fewer accidents, safer streets, and a stronger community as students of all ages settle into the new school year.
