TEMPE – The city of Tempe celebrated the 36th annual Mayor’s All-Abilities Awards on Tuesday at the Tempe Center for the Arts. The awards honor personal accomplishments and recognize the individuals, educators and organizations, making Tempe a more inclusive place for people of all abilities.
The annual event is presented by the city’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Commission on Disability Concerns, with generous support from the Tempe Diablos and Baseline Flowers.
A special honor

This year, the city
renamed the Tempe Mayor’s Disability Commission Award of Merit to the Tim Bolen Award of Merit, honoring former winner Tim Bolen and his legacy of inclusion
. Bolen, a longtime Tempe resident, is a former professional cyclist and endurance athlete who founded
2Gether We Live, a nonprofit that gives people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in multisport events.
Through coaching, advocacy and community-building, Bolen has empowered hundreds of individuals—including wounded veterans and people with intellectual or developmental disabilities—to experience the joy of racing and belonging. Even after being diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2020, he continues to inspire others by showing up, staying active and living out the mission of inclusion.
“Today is not just about recognizing achievements,” said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods. “It’s about celebrating the spirit of inclusivity that defines our city. It’s about acknowledging the triumphs of those who have turned obstacles into steppingstones, challenging us all to push beyond limitations and embrace possibility.”
Our keynote speaker
This year’s keynote speaker was Elysha Ludwig Arvayo of The Arc of Tempe, which is celebrating 60 years of service. Founded by families determined to create better opportunities for their loved ones, The Arc remains a vital part of the Tempe community. Its mission is to promote equality for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through advocacy, education and social inclusion. |
