Tempe, AZ –   The Tempe Police Department arrested a suspect involved in a violent spree that began with gunfire on the freeway and escalated into a shooting at a resort. The suspect’s actions involved multiple shots fired, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

The series of events began when the suspect, a 34-year-old man, was standing on the side of the freeway, waving a gun. At some point, the suspect fired the gun at a passing vehicle.  The driver of the vehicle that was hit by gunfire quickly exited the freeway to contact police. The driver was not hurt. The suspect then took off on foot, hopping a fence into the parking lot of Tempe Diablo Stadium before running toward the nearby Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at the Buttes.

While fleeing, the suspect confronted two third-party contracted employees of the resort, ordering them to the ground before firing several rounds, striking the two victims. Their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening and were sustained from shrapnel, not direct gunfire. The victims were able to run away from the suspect. The suspect then continued through the resort grounds and attempted to carjack a woman who was able to run away from the car. Tempe officers located the suspect in the resort parking lot and arrested him without incident.

The hotel was evacuated to ensure the safety of the guests. Police secured the area to make sure there were no other victims or threats.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Tempe Police Department is working closely with other local agencies to gather evidence and all relevant information.

The Tempe Police Department thanks the public for their cooperation and urges anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
