Tempe Police Arrest Suspect in Connection to Local DNC Office Shootings

Post Date:10/22/2024 3:30 PM

TEMPE, ARIZ. – Yesterday, Tempe Police officers arrested 60-year-old Jeffrey Michael Kelly of Ahwatukee in connection with the three incidents of shooting at the Democratic National Committee office located at 1425 W. Southern Ave. in Tempe.

Investigators also observed Kelly posting anti-democratic signs in Chandler and Ahwatukee, attaching clear plastic baggies containing a white powdery substance labeled, “BIOHAZARD.”

Kelly was arrested without incident on several charges.

  • Three counts of terrorism – a class 2 felony
  • Three counts of criminal damage- a class 1 misdemeanor
  • Two counts of shooting at nonresidential structure - a class 3 felony
  • Two counts of unlawful discharge - a class 6 felony

There may be additional charges pending in reference to the white powder substance attached to political signs.

This is still an active investigation but for the past five weeks, Tempe detectives have worked tirelessly to bring this case to a close.

Ultimately, it was a Silent Witness tip from the public who helped point to the suspect. This is another example of how public involvement can make a community safer.

“Justice does not have a political party,” said Tempe Police Chief Kenneth McCoy. “The Tempe Police Department will uphold the law and protect everyone, no matter their political affiliation. There is no place in the City of Tempe for political threats or intimidation. Our department recognizes the significance of yesterday’s arrest. We want to reassure this community that when you exercise your right to vote over the next 13 days, we are committed to keeping you safe.”

He added, “We hope people can find ways to civilly solve their differences, and that these final days leading up to the election and beyond will be peaceful.”
