Tempe Mayor acts to temporarily alter operations at bars, restaurants, gyms, recreation and entertainment venues

Post Date:03/19/2020 11:12 AM

Tempe, AZ – Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell has issued a proclamation to order the closure of Tempe bars, in-restaurant dining, and recreational and entertainment venues effective 8 p.m. tonight, March 19, as well as the closure of Tempe gyms and workout studios as of 1 p.m. today, March 19.

Mitchell’s action is in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic.

Under the Tempe City Charter, and following the Tempe City Council’s approval yesterday of an ordinance declaring an extraordinary local emergency citywide, the Mayor has the authority to issue such proclamations in order to ensure public health and safety.

Effective today, the ordered closures and operational changes include:

  • Gymnasiums, fitness centers and workout studios shall be closed to the public as of 1 p.m. on March 19.
  • Restaurants, nightclubs and bars shall be closed to the public as of 8 p.m. on March 19, except for services of delivery or curbside pick-up.
  • Recreational and entertainment venues, such as movie theaters, comedy clubs, bowling alleys, arcades and others shall be closed to the public as of 8 p.m. on March 19.

“This decision was made by me after careful consultation with experts and consideration of the various views of many local residents and business owners,” Mitchell said. “This is a very serious matter and, while it is a difficult decision, I must consider the health and safety of community members in Tempe and beyond. We must take active steps to slow the spread of COVID-19.”
