Reused street signs becoming new work of art at Tempe Town Lake

Post Date:10/31/2019 2:00 PM

A new, temporary art piece will transform the north side of Tempe Town Lake beginning this month.  Local artist Laura Spalding Best will unveil Rise, a unique public art piece showcasing decommissioned City of Tempe street signs that depict the sky transitioning from sunrise to sunset. Rise will be installed Nov. 1-3. Meet the artist at the Tempe Town Lake Turns 20 Birthday Party on Saturday, Nov. 9, where she’ll host an interactive workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Spalding Best’s work celebrates everyday objects to discover commonalities within city infrastructures. She reuses objects as her canvas. Themes of sustainability and water use in the urban desert are at the core of her work.

Rise is part of a new addition to Tempe’s public art residency programs, which are meant to support artists and allow them to explore their work using a public art approach. The artwork is commissioned by Tempe Public Art in collaboration with the TCA Gallery Artist in Residency Program. For more information, visit tempe.gov/PublicArt.
