Tempe kids can ride the bus and light rail for free
New Youth Transit Passes available May 13
TEMPE, Ariz. (May 1, 2019) – Tempe kids, ages 6 to 18, can ride all local and regional Valley Metro buses and light rail for free with a Youth Transit Pass. Beginning May 13, Tempe will begin issuing new transit passes to current and new participants of the program.
The new passes, valid July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020, can be obtained at the Tempe Transit Store, 200 E. Fifth St., between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Special Saturday on-site registration will be held June 29 and Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
To sign up for the pass, youths must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, bring a copy of the youth’s birth certificate, bring proof of Tempe residency dated within the last 60 days, and the parent or guardian’s driver’s license or photo ID.
In addition to getting the pass at the Tempe Transit Store, students who attend Tempe, Marcos de Niza, Compadre and McClintock high schools and live in Tempe can get their pass at school.
The popular program has served more than 3,600 youth on average each year since 2005. In 1996, Tempe residents passed a half-cent sales tax for transit operations and improvements. Funding from this tax has benefited programs such as the free Tempe Youth Transit Pass program.
