Tempe Instagrammys winners announced

Post Date:01/12/2019 9:00 AM

Tempe, ARIZ - Last night, the City of Tempe hosted its second Tempe Instagrammys awards. The contest gives prizes and trophies for the very best photos taken of Tempe each year. The prizes are very specific to life in Tempe, such as having your photo hung in the Tempe History Museum, having a day named in your honor by Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell, boating lessons on Tempe Town Lake and so much more.

This is the second year for the contest.  The contest received approximately 1,300 entries. About 50 people were finalists for the awards that were handed out on Friday, Jan. 11 at Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway.

The Best of @Tempegov award went to Joe Grana, now considered Tempe’s photographer of the year.

John Sypniewski won the Tempe Wavemaker Award, for the photographer who is not only skilled but a community builder on Instagram. Mayor Mitchell’s Choice went to Matt Wilczek, who won a day named in his honor for taking Mayor Mitchell’s favorite photo from this year's contest.

Check out a slideshow of all the photos and winners. Next year’s contest will start in November, but you can follow the City of Tempe on Instagram at www.instagram.com/tempegov.

Sponsors for the event include Tempe Camera, South Tempe Style, Tempe Tourism Office, Downtown Tempe Authority, Tempe Center for the Arts, ABC 15 Arizona and the City of Tempe.
