Rural Road fiber-optic infrastructure project installation slated to start in April
TEMPE, Ariz. (March 12, 2018) – Construction to install a city owned fiber-optic line along Rural Road between Continental Drive in northern Tempe and Alexander Boulevard in southern Tempe is slated to start early April 2018 and continue through April 2019.
During this time, small segments of Rural Road will be periodically restricted weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Work near ASU's campus will be completed during the summer. Due to less intrusive construction techniques being utilized, the project should have minimal impacts to the travelling public.
The fiber-optic line will provide the city with a reliable communications network to view, monitor and actively manage traffic conditions. The ultimate goal is to have a hybrid fiber/wireless network that will increase communications bandwidth, eliminate the need for telephone lease lines and improve system performance.
Street restrictions will be posted online as they occur. Visit www.tempe.gov/StreetClosures for more information.
