Interested in applying your experience to real-world land use and zoning decisions in Tempe? The City is seeking Tempe residents to serve on the Board of Adjustment, which holds public hearings and makes decisions on variance applications and appeals under the City’s Zoning and Development Code.

The Board hears and decides variance applications, appeals of Hearing Officer decisions involving variances and abatements, and appeals of decisions made by the Zoning Administrator.

Applicants with experience in land use and zoning, planning, architecture, construction, civil engineering, real estate, development, law, or technical and legal analysis or interpretation of public ordinances and codes are especially encouraged to apply.

Board members must be Tempe residents and able to commit to one meeting per month, typically held on the fourth Wednesday.

The Board of Adjustment meets as needed, typically on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m., in the Harry E. Mitchell Government Center, Tempe City Hall – City Council Chambers, 31 E. Fifth St., Tempe, unless otherwise noted on the meeting agenda. A study session is usually held at 5:30 p.m. on the same date and in the same location.

2. In the “Meeting Type” field, check the boxes for “Board of Adjustment Regular Meeting” and “Board of Adjustment Study Session”.

All recent and upcoming Board of Adjustment meetings will then display on the page.

The Board of Adjustment consists of seven members and two alternates. Each member must be a Tempe resident and able to commit to one Board meeting per month, typically held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Alternate members serve at the Board hearing whenever a regular Board member is unable to attend or must decline due to conflict of interest. The terms are for three years.
