The Water Utilities Department operates
the City’s water treatment and distribution systems, and
wastewater collection and treatment systems. The
Department also administers the City’s water resources and
environmental management programs. Programs include:

Operate/maintain two surface
water treatment plants which supplies potable water to our
residential, commercial and industrial users
·
Maintain groundwater wells and an extensive
water distribution system
·
Provide
water resources administration and regulatory compliance
activities
·
Administer a
Backflow Prevention Program to assure the safety of the
public water systems
·
Operate/maintain the
Kyrene Water Reclamation Facility to treat wastewater for
reuse
·
Operate/maintain publicly owned treatment works (POTW)
which delivers wastewater to the Kyrene
facility as well as the regional 91st Avenue
wastewater treatment plant
·
Operate a State of Arizona Licensed
laboratory to perform analysis for water quality and
wastewater compliance
·
Administer a federally approved
Pretreatment Program for the purpose of protecting the POTW
·
Operate the
Household Products Collection Center for household hazardous
waste
·
Educational/awareness information on
environmental issues
·
Provide technical assistance to City departments
regarding environmental and safety issues and
regulations
·
Administer a
Stormwater Program to assure the quality of storm water
discharges from our municipal
storm sewer system is managed to the maximum extent practicable
·
Represent Tempe's interest in the
SROG (Sub-regional Operating Group) partnership which owns
and operates the 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant
·
Coordinate Issues related to aviation and
aircraft noise
over Tempe
