Special Events/Group Service Projects

The City of Tempe is looking for school groups (junior high, high school, and college), service organizations, and corporate groups, as well as individuals, interested in one-time service projects. Listed below are the City's special events and projects for fall 2008. For project details and to volunteer, contact the City's volunteer office at 480-350-5190.

SEPTEMBER 2008

Peanut Butter & Jam Storytime and Concert
(6 volunteers)
Saturday, September 27, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Volunteers will run the craft activity tables and serve refreshments at this outdoor storytime event with an "Under the Sea" theme.

OCTOBER 2008

Special Olympics Golf Tournament (25-30 volunteers)
Saturday, October 4, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Help a disabled individual enjoy the sport of golf. Volunteers will accompany a special-needs golfer through nine holes; other volunteers will run golf-themed activities and games for younger participants.

Tardeada Hispanic Cultural Celebration 25-30 volunteers)
Sunday, October 12, shifts between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. (

Be a part of the color, music and dancing of Tardeada! Volunteers can assist children in the craft activity booths and bounce units at this annual celebration.

Peanut Butter & Jam Storytime and Concert (6 volunteers)
Monday, October 27, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Volunteers will run the craft activity tables and serve refreshments at this outdoor storytime event with a fall theme.

Family Halloween Carnival and Haunted House (25-30 volunteers)
Thursday, October 30, 3 to 6 and/or 5 to 9 p.m.

Depending on shift, volunteers will help with set-up and decorating, run a carnival game or activity, escort young children through the haunted house, and then assist with tear-down and clean-up.

Annual Family Halloween Carnival (12-16 volunteers)
Friday, October 31, 5 - 9 p.m.
Volunteers will supervise children using the bounce inflatable units, help load kids on and off the choo choo ride and serve at the information booth at this low-cost Halloween alternative for the community.

DECEMBER 2008

Holiday Tea Party for Retirees (6 volunteers)
Friday, December 5 (shifts between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.)

Volunteers are needed to help set-up, decorate, serve refreshments and clean-up at this special tea party for senior adults.

Winter Wonderland Carnival (25-30 volunteers)
Friday, December 5, 3 -6 and/or 5-8 p.m.

Depending on shift, volunteers will help with set-up and decorating, run a carnival game or activity, and then tear-down and clean-up at this fun, free family event that kicks-off the holiday season.

Holiday Fantasia (10 volunteers)
Saturday, December 6, 12:30 to 4:15 p.m.

Volunteers will run craft activities and games, direct visitors to Santa, take photos and more at this holiday-season kick-off event.

Friday Dance (6 volunteers)
Friday, December 12, 5 to 10 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to help set-up and decorate, prepare and serve refreshments, interact with participants and help clean-up at this special holiday dance for teens and adults.

FEBRUARY 2009

Unity Walk (10-15 volunteers)
Saturday, February 7, morning (exact time TBD)

A small team of volunteers will serve at four Tempe locations as "site hosts" handing out t-shirts, water, placards, etc. to community members participating in the walk. Volunteers will also lead their sites group to the Tempe Community Center.

Monday, February 23, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Volunteers will run the craft activity tables and serve refreshments at this outdoor storytime event with a Chinese New Year theme.


YEAR-ROUND ON-GOING GROUP PROJECTS

Project such as the following can generally be scheduled anytime during the year if there is a current need. Call the listed contact person to make arrangements.

Trail Maintenance (10 to 200 volunteers)
Help repair, stabilize and build new trails in the city's Loma del Rio and Hayden Butte Preserve areas.

Graffiti Removal (up to 25-30 volunteers)
Paint out and cover up graffiti on Tempe public buildings and structures. Paint and supplies provided.

Neighborhood Clean-up
Pick-up and remove trash, trim weeds, help repair and beautify an individuals home in Tempe.
Contact: Susan Franchuk at 480-350-8372.

Library Shelf and Book Cleaning (up to 15 volunteers)
Dust and wash library shelves and books while maintaining books in proper order.
