The Escalante Community Center is located in
northeast Tempe at 2150 E. Orange St. The center offers programs for all ages
and volunteer opportunities to work with children. Volunteer positions require
the completion of an application and interview through the Volunteer Office at
480-350-5190.
Early Childhood Education Program
Volunteers are needed to help provide children ages 3 to 5 years develop
social, motor and cognitive skills in a safe, nurturing and educational setting. Volunteers assist the instructor and interact with children. Sessions are held
Mondays through Thursdays, at 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Volunteers may assist with one or more session; minimum commitment, four weeks.
Homework Helpers
Volunteers serve in the Tempe Public Library's
education resource Room at the Escalante Center where they interact with
school-age children. Volunteers aid and direct children in the room, assist with
homework, play games and read to children. Shifts are available Monday through
Thursday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Volunteers may assist with one or more session;
minimum commitment, four weeks.
Family Place Parent/Child Workshops
Family Place offers parents, grandparents and care givers of children ages one to three
the opportunity to spend
quality time together playing, reading and creating crafts, while interacting
with each other in a safe, fun and nurturing environment. In addition, visiting
community experts discuss topics such as literacy, child development, speech
development, nutrition, behavior and discipline. Volunteers assist with play
area set-up, run the craft activities for children, interact with children and
parents, help take down equipment and clean up. The four-week parenting
workshops are offered quarterly at a variety of Tempe community centers and the
Tempe Public Library. The volunteer shift is 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Call for exact session dates and locations. Minimum commitment is one
4-week session.
