Traffic Engineering is responsible for the design of signage and pavement markings throughout the city.  This synergistic group administers the city's traffic calming program, as well as barricading and traffic control projects.  Traffic Engineering is also responsible for conducting traffic signal warrant studies and designing warranted new signals. Transportation Systems is responsible for monitoring and operating the city's signal controllers for the traffic signal system, including managing the traffic signals for light rail transit in Tempe. ITS Systems is the technical term used to refer to the use of advanced technologies to improve travel. Technologies used in ITS include computers, electronic sensors, communications and safety enhancing systems.
