Broadway Road Streetscape and Bike/Ped Improvement Project

For many years, neighbors adjacent to the segment of Broadway Road between Mill Avenue and Rural Road approached the city of Tempe with a wide range of ideas for changes to the street that included: reduced number of vehicles, speed limit reductions, adding bicycle lanes, installation of walls, additional landscaping, noise reduction, and improved pedestrian facilities.  As part of the City’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan, a variety of public meetings and neighborhood discussions were held over the last several years with neighbors near Broadway Road. Preliminary design concepts for the roadway were then developed and successfully used to acquire project funding through federal grant programs and the Tempe City Council.  As recommended by the Broadway Road Action Team, the proposed design concept is below for review.

The Broadway Road Action Team comprises of approximately 12 stakeholders who live or own property in the project area. The Action Team will meet monthly for as long as needed to develop a draft plan. Action Teams members  represent a geographically equitable distribution of stakeholders with a diversity of opinions related to the problem and include a representative of the neighborhood association(s).

Action Team Consensus/Recommendation:

1) Request a study of Broadway Road from I-10 to Loop 101 regarding 2/2 lane configuration impacts.

2) Forward the preferred design concept to the community at large for input.
