Broadway Road Streetscape and Bike/Ped Improvement Project

Background: Neighbors adjacent to the segment of Broadway Road between Mill Avenue and Rural Road expressed ideas to the city of Tempe for changes to the street that included reducing the number of vehicles, reducing the speed limit, adding bicycle lanes, installing walls, adding landscaping, reducing noise, and improving pedestrian facilities.  As part of the City’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan, a variety of public meetings and neighborhood discussions were held over the last several years with neighbors and businesses near Broadway Road.

The Broadway Road Action Team

The Broadway Road Action Team comprises of 14 stakeholders who live or own property in the project area. The Action Team met for as long as was needed to develop a design concept. Action Team members  represent a geographically equitable distribution of stakeholders with a diversity of opinions related to the project and include a representative of the neighborhood association(s).

Proposed Design Concept

Funding

Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Improvement Program federal funds totaling $2.57 million were secured for the design and construction of the project. As part of the CMAQ requirements, local matching dollars are required.  As such, an additional $600,000 in transit funds is budgeted for the project.  The total project budget is $3.17 million.

Next Steps

Residents and businesses will be notified of the refined concept via door hangers, letters to businesses and online. After that, the comments and the refined design concept will be presented to the Transportation Commission, Council Transportation Committee and Tempe City Council. If approved, construction would  last about six to eight months.
