Income Eligibility
Families must have an annual income of $55,000 or less for 2009. Single individuals must have an annual income of $35,000 or less for 2009.

Free Tax  Preparation

  • Tempe Schools Credit Union (2800 S. Mill – between Broadway & Southern on West side of Mill)

  • Saturdays - 9AM-1PM from January 30th - April 10th, 2010. Closed  3/13 and 3/20 for spring break.
  • Wednesdays - 5PM - 7PM on February 3, 10, 17 & 24.

Types of Tax Returns Prepared

  • Federal and Arizona State such as Forms 1040 and 1040EZ and related schedules such as A, B & C-EZ.
  • Past year federal tax returns such as Forms 1040 and 1040EZ and related schedules such as A, B & C-EZ for 2008, 2007 and 2006

 Plan to Spend Some and Save Some of Your Refund

  • The IRS has made it easy to spend some and save some of your federal tax refund by allowing you to split your tax refund among three accounts, such as checking, savings and a US Savings Bond. 
  • Plan to bring your checking and savings account numbers and the name of your financial institution.
  • Ask us how to invest as little as $50 of your federal tax refund in your future by buying a US Savings Bond.

 What you MUST Bring With You to the Tax Preparation Visit

  • Valid Picture Identification for yourself and/or your spouse
  • Social Security cards or ITIN cards/numbers for you, your spouse and all dependent
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and all dependents
  • Forms W-2 from every place you worked in 2009 and Forms 1099, if applicable
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Form 1099-INT or 1099-DIV)
  • Total amount paid for day care and day care provider’s tax identification number
  • Account numbers for your checking and savings accounts
  • A copy of last year’s tax return
  • Information for all deductions and credits
  • If filing jointly, you and your spouse must be present to sign the tax returns

 Self-Employed Taxpayers

  • You may NOT be eligible to receive free tax preparation at this and other Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites.

 We MAY be able to prepare your 2009 tax return if you meet the following IRS VITA program requirements:

  • Had business expenses of $5,000 or less
  • Used the “cash” method of accounting
  • Did NOT have an inventory at any time during the year
  • Did not have a net loss from your business
  • Had only 1 business as a “sole proprietor”
  • Had no employees during the year
  • Do NOT deduct expenses for business use of your home
  • Do NOT have prior year unallowed passive activity losses from this business

 
If you do not meet these requirements, you will need to have your 2009 tax return prepared by a paid preparer.
