History and Role

The Tempe Community Council was founded in 1972 as a means for individuals and organizations to act together to identify and plan for needed social service programs in our community.  Tempe Community Council's goal is to work as a planner, researcher, educator, advocate, and resource to improve the funding and policies effecting human services.  Tempe Community Council's staff and consultants serve a 30 member volunteer board of directors.  Volunteers establish policy, identify programs, and work with the staff to implement programs in the community.

History: In 2002, TCC turned 30!  TCC was formed in 1972 to give Tempeans a central place to discuss needs for social services and ways the needs could be met. TCC incorporated and received its 501(c)(3) tax exemption in 1976 and became a United Way agency soon thereafter. In 1984, TCC initiated the Don Carlos Humanitarian Award to recognize outstanding Tempeans serving the Tempe community. TCC began reviewing applications for City of Tempe human services funding in 1986. TCC is now working with the City on a long-range People Improvement Plan currently through a series of citizen studies of special needs of target groups. The Homeless Task Force completed its work in 2000 and the Tempe Task Force on Aging began its work this year.

Functions

AGENCY REVIEW: One of Tempe Community Council's primary functions is serving as the Human Services Commission for the City of Tempe.  TCC staffs a 45 member agency review volunteer panel made up of community representatives that annually reviews grant applications from non-profit organizations.   Types of funding include: City of Tempe General Revenue Funds, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funds, Tempe's Help to Others Funds and Seized Asset Community Action (SACA) Funds.  Recommendations are forwarded to the Mayor and City Council for final approval. Funded agencies are monitored by TCC throughout the year.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION AND REFERRAL: Tempe Community Council publishes a quarterly newsletter (NETWORK) to inform Tempe citizens of current human services issues.
