Coalition battles Tempe's
underage drinking problem

Tempe is
pouring resources into a newly formed coalition
to combat underage drinking and drug use. The
coalition is launching an education campaign in
middle schools and high schools, which also puts
Tempe in the position of setting the example for
positive change.

ANNUAL INTERFAITH THANKSGIVING SERVICE TO TAKE PLACE
AT UNIVERSITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
The Tempe Emergency Assistance Ministry
(TEAM) Interfaith Thanksgiving service will be held at University
Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, November 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Pastor Art Campbell from Mission Del Sol Presbyterian Church will be
speaking and Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman will read a Thanksgiving
proclamation. Collections from the service will be donated to the
Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program (I-HELP) to provide
emergency assistance for Tempe’s homeless population. In addition,
there will be a food donation box at the church to benefit Tempe
Salvation Army’s and Tempe Community Action Agency’s various programs.

Susan Ringler named Tempe’s 2009 Don Carlos Humanitarian of the Year
Tempe
Community Council is pleased to announce that Susan S. Ringler has been
selected as the 2009 Don Carlos Humanitarian of the Year.
Presented annually by the Tempe Community Council, the Don Carlos
Humanitarian Award is considered to be one of Tempe’s most prestigious
distinctions and honors those individuals who give back selflessly to
our community.
The 26th Annual Don Carlos Award Reception
will take place on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
in the Arizona Historical Society Courtyard. The public is welcome to
attend; individual tickets are $50, or $80 per couple. Call TCC at
480.858.2300 for tickets and sponsorship opportunities.

HELP KIDS STAY AWAY FROM ALCOHOL AND DRUGS: Announcing
Logo Contest to Help Build Community Awareness
Tempe’s Committee for Youth, Families and
Community is
holding a contest, complete with prizes, for Tempe youth to design a
logo to encourage young people to stay away from alcohol and drugs. The
contest is open to all students from sixth through twelfth grade that
live in Tempe or attend a Tempe school. The deadline for submission is
5:00pm on December 1, 2009.

Tempe Human Service request for proposal now available
Tempe Community Council (TCC) is pleased to announce the release of the
City of Tempe Human Service Request for Proposal (RFP). This RFP is for
eligible 501(c)(3) Valley-wide nonprofit agencies that deliver human
services to the clients and residents of Tempe. On September 14, 2009
applications will be available online. Any agencies new to the process
must complete an agency contact form available at
www.tempe.gov/tcc and contact TCC directly. All completed
applications are due October 30, 2009.

CALL FOR
CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT
Tempe Community Council (TCC) and the City of
Tempe are looking for citizens to engage in a human services grant
review process titled “Agency Review.” Citizens from all walks of life,
ages and experience are needed. Volunteers work with fellow Tempeans to
make funding recommendations to the Tempe City Council regarding human
services. The time commitment includes three to four days over a
three-month time period (beginning in November 2009), in addition to
individual proposal reading time. If you are interested in participating
in this volunteer experience and live or work in Tempe, please contact

Newly Designed Modern
Wellness Iconic Feature to Be Unveiled at Tempe Marketplace
Tempe
Leadership Class XXII is pleased to announce the unveiling of a newly
designed iconic feature, Modern Wellness, to benefit human services in
Tempe. On Saturday, July 18 at 10:00am, the Class, in partnership with
Vestar/Tempe Marketplace and the Coin Maze Campaign will unveil the new
feature showcased in front of Harkins Theatre at Tempe Marketplace. The
Modern Wellness feature is an interactive public art piece that allows
individuals to donate spare change to the Tempe Community Foundation
with the idea of “Give Change to Make Change”.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR TEMPE'S
PRESTIGIOUS DON CARLOS HUMANITARIAN AWARD
Tempe
Community Council is currently seeking nominations for the 26th
Annual Don Carlos Humanitarian Award. Considered to be one of Tempe’s
most prestigious honors, this award is presented annually to an
individual or couple who has given exceptional service to the community
over an extended period of time, has benefited the less fortunate in
lasting ways, and in doing so has made Tempe a better place to live.
The nominee
must be a current or former resident of Tempe or work in Tempe.

Tempe Community Foundation Awards $7,656 to Six Tempe
Nonprofits
Six nonprofit organizations providing Tempe residents with basic needs
have received a combined $7,656 in grant funding from the Tempe
Community Foundation. Nonprofits were awarded $1,276 each
and were selected for funding based on recommendations from a citizen
review board organized by the Tempe Community Council.
