On
Oct. 24, the TCA Design Team
successfully presented the 100
percent
Design Development (DD) package to the City Council in a Study
Session. Vice Mayor Barb Carter started the session by recognizing and
thanking TCA Steering Committee members, present and former Arts
Commissioners, the architecture team and City staff for their
commitment throughout the project from the initial thoughts of a
center several years ago to the presentation of the final designs. Ms.
Carter encouraged continuation of that commitment through the life of
the project and beyond as the Tempe Center for the Arts unfolds.
After
Vice Mayor Carter’s comments, Joe Salvatore and John Kane of
ARCHITEKTON and David Thurman of Barton Myers Associates presented a
"walk-through" tour of the new facility explaining
structural techniques, various finishes throughout the building, key
elements of the site plan, and thoughts regarding the progress of the
public art projects incorporated into the TCA. The presentation was
fortified with exquisite visual support supplied through printed, as
well as, computer-generated renderings. The level of excitement
experienced during the Schematic Design presentation to Council (April
11, 2002) held steady with the 100 percent Design Development
presentation. City Council members readily and unanimously granted
direction to move ahead to Construction Documents, the next phase of
the project.
Earlier
in the day on Oct.
24 the TCA Steering Committee met to receive the 100
percent
DD presentation. This presentation, a more in-depth version of the
City Council presentation, filled some requests that were generated
from the 85 percent
DD Steering Committee meeting several weeks ago. In particular,
additional information and more highly developed visuals on the
finishes of the Main Theater, complete information regarding the
evolving lighting package, and a revamp of the signage package were
presented. In addition, public artists Ned Kahn, Mayme Kratz, Mark
Ryan presented updates on their portions of the project to the
Steering Committee. The concepts of Ramona Sakiestewa, who was unable
to attend the presentation, were reviewed by Architect Joe Salvatore.
(A future update will feature the concepts as presented by the
artists.)
As
ARCHITEKTON and Barton Myers Associates, Inc. move forward with the
$63 million Tempe Center for the Arts, the budget and timetable are
being closely monitored through continuous value engineering and
demanding project calendar management.
The Tempe Center for the Arts is being funded through a dedicated
sales tax
passed by Tempe voters in May 2000.
