During the City Council Study Session on April
11, 2002, the Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) design team of Barton
Myers Associates, Inc. and Tempe-based ARCHITEKTON
presented the final Schematic Design for approval. The Schematic
Design (SD) incorporated many comments resultant of previous SD review
work sessions held with Executive and Steering Committees, User Group
representatives, city of Tempe staff and other project stakeholders.
The schematic design phase of the project developed and finalized
building floor plans and elevations, mechanical systems plans,
advanced landscape plans, seating layouts for the 600-seat Proscenium
Theater and the 200 seat Studio Theater, and advanced acoustical
engineering. As presented to City Council, the Schematic Design
remains within the targeted project budget amount of $63 million.
As
part of the presentation, architect Barton Myers announced the
proposed public artists for the project. From a record 233 applicants,
two individual artists and a team of two artists were chosen by a
selection panel and, subsequently, approved for submittal to the
Council by the Tempe Municipal Arts Commission. James Carpenter from
New York, Ramona Sakiestewa from New Mexico, and the team of Mayme
Kratz and Mark Ryan from Arizona and California, respectively, will
soon begin work with the design team to identify and develop art
opportunities within the project. The public art aspect of the TCA
project is supported by the City of Tempe Percent for Art program.
City
Council received the presentation with enthusiasm and directed the
design team to move forward with the Design Development (DD) phase of
the project. DD, scheduled to reach completion in late September 2002,
will further refine architectural and mechanical details of the Tempe
Center for the Arts.
The Tempe Center for the Arts is being funded through a dedicated
sales tax
passed by Tempe voters in May 2000.
