Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I obtain a copy of a report?
A: Complete a written request form in person at 120 East 5th Street or submit by mail. We must receive a request for a copy of a police report in writing. No reports are sent out automatically and we do not accept electronic, telephonic or fax requests.
 
Q: Who can request a copy of a police report?
A: Any person who is able to supply information that would allow us to locate the record
 
Q: What information is needed to request a copy of a police report?
A: Please provide as much information as possible, i.e. type of record, report number (if available), date, time, location of incident, names of parties involved, etc.
 
Q: When should I submit my request?
A: Requests should be submitted as soon as possible. No report will be sent directly, you must request it. Forms and information for requesting police records can be found on our Records page.
 
Q: How long before my police report reaches the Records Section?
A: It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for the original report to be completed and submitted to the Records Section. Reports involving lengthy investigations or accidents with physical injuries usually take the longest.
 
Q: What is the best time to check on the status of my request?
A: Monday thru Friday from 8am until 2:30pm at (480) 350 – 8304
 
Q: What information can be released over the phone?
A: The Records Section is very limited in the information it can release over the phone. If you are looking for specific information from a police report we will be unable to provide that information over the phone.
 
Q: How can I get my a criminal records for myself or someone else in Tempe?
A: The records section is able to provide two methods of releasing individual histories. A Tempe records search by name and DOB can be completed using our standard written request form. This search can be done on yourself or another individual as long as you can provide the correct name and DOB.  

If you are looking for a certified letter of your personal record in Tempe, the records section offers a Letter of Verification. This letter is based on name and DOB search and is certified by our Custodian of Records. Letter of Verifications can only be completed if government issued identification is provided.
 

Q: Why are sections of my report blackened out?
A: Most information the Tempe Police Department houses is public and subject to release by the department. By housing confidential information, Tempe is obligated to protect those items identified by law and will not release that information.
 
Q: How can I find out if I have a Tempe City warrant?
A: Unfortunately we can not give out warrant information over the phone. If you believe you have a Tempe City Court Warrant please contact them at (480) 350 – 8270.
