Tempe Police - Physical Agility Evaluation

The job of police officer requires reasonable levels of cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength and endurance, as well as flexibility.  In order to perform specific job tasks with enough reserve energy for emergency situations, and to enjoy normal activities while off-duty, officers must maintain an acceptable level of fitness.

The Physical Agility Evaluation consists of three components: 1.5 mile run, push-ups, and sit-ups.  The evaluation is designed to measure an applicant's overall cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance.  An applicant must successfully pass all three components to pass the physical agility test and move forward in the hiring process.

Applicants who fail any portion of the test will have the option of re-testing the following month when the next test is administered.  Applicants who re-test within a year of the Written Test will not have to re-take the Written Test, but will have to successfully complete all three components of the Physical Agility Evaluation.

Applicants should wear comfortable clothing and good running shoes for the Physical Agility Test.  Applicants are advised to bring their own water to the test, and make sure they are properly hydrated.  It is wise to stretch and / or warm up before the test to avoid unnecessary injury.

1.5 mile run

Applicants are given a number which must be pinned to the front of their shirt during the run.  Applicants must run six (6) complete laps around the 1/4 mile track in fourteen (14) minutes or less NO WALKING IS PERMITTED during the run or it will be considered a failure. Applicants may wear headphones and carry water during the run if they choose.  Applicants are responsible for keeping track of their laps and to listen for their finishing time so it can be recorded.

Push-ups

A proper push-up begins in the front leaning rest position with arms extended, hands on the ground shoulder width apart with fingers pointing forward.  Feet may be together or up to 12" apart.  Applicants must bend their arms at the elbow to lower their chest until it contacts the top of the block and then return to the front leaning rest position.   This is considered one (1) push-up.  NO MODIFIED PUSHUPS ARE ALLOWED.  A monitor will keep the official count, and push-ups will only be counted if they are properly done.  Applicants are encouraged to perform their maximum amount of push-ups with the minimum being twenty-one (21), no time limit. If an applicant finds it necessary to rest during the test, they may only do so in the front leaning rest (up) position.  If an applicant stops with any part of the torso touching the block or ground, or if you are unable to complete twenty-one (21) push-ups, the applicant will fail this component of the test.

Sit-ups

A proper sit-up begins with the applicant's back on the mat, knees bent and feet flat on the ground, with the hands either cupping the ears or interlocked behind the head. Using the abdominal muscles, the applicant must raise their upper body off the floor until their elbows touch the knees or brake the plain of the knees, then return to the starting position. CRUNCHES ARE NOT SIT-UPS AND WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. A monitor will keep the official count, and sit-ups will only be counted if they are done properly. Applicants are encouraged to perform their maximum amount of sit-ups with the minimum being twenty-nine (29), within one minute. If an applicant finds it necessary to rest during the test, they may only do so in the "up" position. If an applicant stops with their back on the floor or if they are unable to complete twenty-nine (29) sit-ups, the applicant will fail this portion of the evaluation.
