Do I need to pre-register for the
written test?
Can
I take the test anytime or can I schedule a time to take the test?
What
does the written test consist of?
-
The written
test is a comprehensive, entry-level, law enforcement
examination that measures -
-
It is a
multiple choice exam.
-
No
calculators or other devices are permitted (or needed) for
successful completion of the exam.
-
There is NO
STUDY GUIDE for this test distributed by the City of Tempe.
However, you may find it useful to study material from the
Internet or from resource books related to entry-level law
enforcement testing.
-
The test will take
approximately three (3) hours to complete (so plan accordingly).
-
Test will be scored at the
time you complete the exam and you will be informed of your
score at that time.
-
A minimum score of 68 is
required to pass and move forward with the testing process.
What
happens after I pass the written exam?
-
Applicants who pass the
written exam are invited to participate in the physical fitness
test (refer to the "Physical Agility Evaluation" page, which can
be found under the "Employment Information" link above, for
details reference the physical fitness standards).
What happens if I
don't pass the written exam?

go when completing the employment, driving history and other
information asked for on the background packet?
-
DO NOT EXCLUDE or LEAVE OFF
any information!!!
-
Include ALL traffic
citations, arrests, drug usage, employers, residences, ect.
-
Be as specific as possible.
If you can't remember specific dates, something like "summer
1995" is sufficient.
-
REMEMBER that just because
something was expunged/removed from your driving or criminal
record does not mean that it did not happen. YOU MUST INCLUDE
IT!!!
-
Failure to include these
details (no matter how insignificant you think they are) may
result in permanent disqualification from the hiring process.
If I am from out of
state do I need to notify the Tempe Police Department to make
special arrangements for testing? How long should I plan on
staying?
-
NO. We will identify
those candidates who are from out of state at the written test,
when the applications and background packets are turned in.
-
It is recommended that you
stay through Tuesday following the written and physical if
possible.
-
We will do our best to get
through as many steps of the hiring process as we can while you
are here.
-
Oftentimes this means taking
our written test on Friday (for example), the physical fitness
test on Saturday, a polygraph on Sunday, and the oral board on
Monday.
-
Depending on the number of
out of state candidates this may take longer. We can not
guarantee or promise that you will get through each of these
steps.
-
YOU MUST PASS both the
written and the physical fitness test in order to move on to the
polygraph and oral board.
How long does the
hiring process take?
-
It can take approximately 4
to 6 months to complete.
-
The longest and most time
consuming portion of the process, is the background
investigation. For out of state applicants and lateral
applicants, this portion can take even longer.
-
We have academy positions to
fill throughout 2008 and 2009. Each month we identify
individuals whose performance in the testing process warrants
them moving forward for possible consideration.
If I am a police officer working
for another city, state, or federal agency does Tempe accept lateral
police officers?
-
YES... The Tempe Police
Department has embarked on an aggressive recruitment campaign
which includes hiring qualified, experienced police officers who
would like to join our ranks.
-
The Tempe Police Department
recognizes the added value of lateral applicants.
-
Lateral applicants are
processed in two groups -
-
Lateral police officer
applicants are required to participate in and successfully
complete each stage of the hiring process (beginning with the
written test).
-
Out of state lateral police
officer applicants wishing to bypass the Arizona Law Enforcement
Academy (ALEA), may be eligible for a waiver test in order to
obtain AZPOST certification.
-
They must have attended
and graduated from a police academy similar in length and
content to an AZPOST certified academy.
